On Monday, 27th April, Dave Coates (ARPS, MPAGB, EFIAP), delivered a very entertaining slide show titled "Light in the Lakes".
It highlighted the many changeable (and unpredictable) moods of the landscape of the Lake District, created in many cases simply by the prevailing weather conditions.
We were taken from Catbells to Surprise View, and from Grassmere to Castle Crag (which, incidentally, never looked to us like Dave made it look. It looked like Easter Island on a Tropical morning!). With a lot of his images, Dave showed thought-provoking comparisons of the effects of light at different times of the day. A shot taken during the morning, or early afternoon, was transformed into something brilliant by simply getting out earlier and waiting for the sun to rise. Or waiting for the early-morning mists to clear. Or, alternatively, waiting till the calm of the evening. Dave breaks all the rules in some of his shots; he has mirror images and shots which tend to defy all the lectures we get on composition. However, he left us all speechless. Dave has an extensive knowledge of the Lake District, and allowed his show to take us from the North to the South of the area in great detail. It proved to be an informative and enjoyable trip! A special "Thank you" goes to Dave for stepping in at the (literally) last minute to provide the show. He is now firmly noted in our Address Book! Dave is, as he himself pointed out, only a phone call away. We'll be making that call! |
