Monday 15th June, saw Vince Rooker ARPS, DPAGB, APAGB, EFIAP (and general all-round sharp-shooter) dragged away from his garden-based target practice to deliver a couple of broadsides and a few well-placed potshots to our Members, in his judging of the Swan Trophy portrait competition.
With in excess of 40 prints to deliberate over, he had his hands full! But, I'm sure everyone will agree (or, at least, the Winners will), that he coped admirably.
In an entertaining evening, Vince whittled down the wide selection of subjects... from muscle-bound pugilists to delicate Gothic ladies... and from rifle-toting "laydees of ze rezeestance" to soft-focus babes in arms... they all fell by the wayside. Leaving us with this motley crew...
|
In first place, with this beautifully-lit, soft-focus portrait of "Stephanie", we have Phil Davis.
Vince thought it "a beautiful, gentle portrait. A lovely study
which demonstrated the skills of a very accomplished portrait
photographer".

 |
In
second place, with his Whitby Goth-girl study entitled "All in the
coffin", we have another prize-winning appearance by Carl Gorse.
"A good, crisp print, the background of which gave the scene some atmosphere". |
 |
And, in third place we have a partcularly grimy contribution entitled "German engine driver", by Phil Davis.
"An excellent, well-photographed male portrait".

Runners-up, you may ask? And so you should! Every Judge we've seen in
recent years has commented on the difficulties of separating that last
handfull of prints into Winners and also-rans. You're just So Good!
Hence the introduction of the "Highly Commended" categories.
This time 'round???
Honourable mentions go to:
Sharon davis, for her "Cowboy" print - "An excellent, pin-sharp print";
Trevor Jones for his "The two of us" - "Not easy to photograph more than one model in a portrait. Extremely well done";
and Mick Martindale for a "Well done, lovely Rembrandt-lit image".
